Carrickmacross lace has been in the news recently because the lace on the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress was said to be in Carrickmacross style. This lace was made by cutting motifs from machine-made lace and then appliquéing them on to net. However, real Carrickmacross lace is made by stitching organdie to net following a pattern and then cutting away the surplus organdie. The net can then be decorated with further stitching.

More than ten years ago A Course in Carrickmacross written by Sheila Regan appeared in ‘Lace’, and here we include the introductory article which explains what materials are needed and the basic techniques, the second article with a pattern for a small mat, the third article with a pattern for a third project and the final article with the final project. The articles come from ‘Lace’ 95 (July 1999), 96 (October 1999), 97 (January 2000) and 98 (April 2000).
