Devon Lace, Past to Present
An Exhibition by the Devon Lace Teachers
6th October to 21st December 2018
The late Autumn exhibition, titled “Devon Lace, Past to Present” is a display to showcase the history of Devon Lace through to what is currently made by the group and their students. Examples of traditional Honiton, Devon Trolly, Honiton Point and Branscombe Point will be shown through to the coloured Honiton lace now being made, in silk, replicating the coloured Colyton Chromatic shown at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
Although the majority of the group teach Devon laces, other laces are taught by some members and the group themselves make a wide variety of both British and Continental laces which will also be on show. It is no longer the case that only Honiton lace is made in Devon!
The Devon Lace Teachers are the only group of teachers that meet regularly and have been doing so since it was started, under Devon County Council, in 1949. Mrs Annie Whittaker was the first Chairman and used to attend her classes and meetings wearing her leathers and riding her motorbike! Sadly, we cannot compete with that!
