15-16 June 2019

This will be the fourth early lace course to be held at the magnificent Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire built for Bess of Hardwick at the end of the sixteenth century. We will be in the Steward's Room within a few steps of a door that will take you into the public area of the Hall.

As with previous courses Phyllis Brown will be our liaison with the Hardwick staff, she will also be providing home-baked cake to go with our coffee and tea and organising light lunches of sandwiches and fruit. Phyllis has been a volunteer at Hardwick for more than twenty years and probably knows the building better than many of the staff. If all goes to plan we hope that a visit to the attics (usually out of bounds) can be arranged to see the seventeenth century lace that has been in the Hall for four hundred years.

The lacemaking part of the weekend will be led by Gil Dye who will be sharing some of the extensive early lace research she has undertaken over the past years. The course is suitable for beginners as well as experienced lacemakers. Patterns will be available that are based on lace with a Hardwick connection - this is the suggested starting point if this is your first Hardwick course. If you have done a previous course with Gil you are invited to contact her (at gildye6@gmail.com) to discuss the lace you might tackle over the weekend.

Cost will be £132 for Lace Guild members and £162 for non-members which includes tuition, all refreshments and access to the Hall (even if you are not a National Trust member).

The course will run from 10am to 4pm, with a break for lunch, on both Saturday and Sunday.

The course is non-residential so if you are travelling from a distance you will need to find accommodation and travel to the Hall, unfortunately we are unable to help arrange this for you, however if you do expect to be on your own in a B&B and would like some company please let Sharon at the Hollies know (at clerk@laceguild.org) and she may be able to put you in touch with someone in the same situation.

To book a place on the course please download the form here or contact The Hollies.
